What is floating?
Floating is the method of attaining the deepest state of rest/meditation that you can experience. by spending an hour or longer lying in a suspension of epsom salt (1000lbs in 200 gallons) that is only 10’’ deep, you can experience the feeling of weightlessness. the water and air is maintained at skin temperature along with complete absence of sound and light. this allows your mind absolute relaxation both mental and physical.
how do i prepare for my float?
- Do NOT drink caffeine prior to floating. (The longer the better but at least 3 hours is recommended.)
- Avoid shaving prior to floating. (This is to avoid irritation from the salt. If you have sensitive skin the more time you should give prior to floating.)
- Eat a little something prior to floating. (We recommend an hour or so before floating. Avoid heavy meals and empty stomachs.)
- Avoid drinking a lot of liquid for the hour prior to floating. (This is to avoid feeling the urge to empty your bladder in the middle of a float.)
how far in advance should i book my appointment?
Elevate Float Center recommends booking in advance. Weekends are the busiest times because the majority of people do not work at this time. Our online booking tool is easily accessible, but should not be used for booking same day appointments. Contact the center directly by phone. At Elevate we try to accommodate our customers, but booking the same day is often difficult.
what should i bring?
- If you have long hair, please bring something to put your hair in a bun.
Some people bring a hairbrush.
If you wear contact lenses, bring a case for them.
what do i wear?
We always recommend not wearing anything while floating. This aides in giving you the full effect of not having any external sensations that a bathing suit would give.
What if I am claustrophobic?
People who say they have challenges with claustrophobia probably assume that they will be confined to an enclosed space. People with this challenge often feel like they are floating in outer space. They are NOT trapped nor do they have the feeling of being trapped. However, you can use the tank with the door open if you wish. You are in control of the situation and can get in and out when ever you want. The tank is such an excellent place to go through claustrophobia that if you want to get rid of yours, it is probably the best place to do it. It is not uncommon for people who have feelings of claustrophobia to actually exit the tank expressing that they feel that they no longer suffer from this challenge.
HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I PLAN ON BEING AT ELEVATE FLOAT CENTER?
Please plan to be at Elevate for 90 minutes for returning clients and closer to 110 minutes for first time clients.
CAn i wear a swim/shower cap?
Yes, but we do NOT recommend it. It will not keep your hair dry. It would be too tight around your head to keep you hair dry but it would most definitely detract from your flotation experience.
CAn pregnant women use the tank?
Yes. Women often report relief from the pull of gravity. Floating has given women a welcome rest. We suggest that pregnant women inform their physicians or midwives and get their opinion prior to using the tank. Women who have high risk pregnancies should NOT float.
do people fall asleep in the tank?
Yes, many people fall asleep in the tank. It tends to be such good sleep that a lot of people don’t even realize they fell asleep.
can two people float together in the same tank?
No, two people will not fit in the tank together. A second person would just disturb you. This is your time to relax. “The ultimate alone time." We recommended that an appointment be scheduled at the same time in separate rooms so that you may exit at the same time talk about and compare experiences after.
how clean is the water?
We pride ourselves in our custom filtration units that will provide the highest water quality available. The salt concentration in the tank alone provide a very unappealing environment for germs and bacteria to grow to begin with, But on top of that we filter the water down to 1micron, which is smaller than skin cells. In addition, we continue adding disinfection steps by utilizing the most up to date technology in UV Sterilization and Ozone injection systems that runs after every single float session, throughout the day, and night to maintain temperature and constant cleaning.
why epsom salt?
There is a long history with epsom salt use that ranges from at home baths to relieve joint pain and reduce inflammation. Epsom salt is composed of naturally occurring minerals magnesium and sulfate, which can help improve health in numerous ways. The magnesium is absorbed through your skin while you lie there during your float. Magnesium helps regulate activity of more than 300 enzyme pathways in the body which is how it helps aid in lowering blood pressure, hyperactivity, lowering heart rate, and medical research has indicated that it helps lower the risk or severity of diabetes and reduces inflammation and relieves pain. Sulfates are also essential for many processes in the body like helping to flush toxins and helping form proteins in joints, brain tissue and relieving lactic acid from sore muscles.
what does sensory deprivation mean?
Sensory deprivation floating is the attempt to remove sensory input as much as feasable using the float tank as a tool. The complete lack of external stimulation allows your body and mind to have your entire session to unwind and unplug for that duration. All the information that your brain processes every fraction of a second that we dont necessarily pay attention to from processing light, and sounds, to controlling our muscles and balance. These constantly are making your brain work at amazing speeds. The float session gives your mind the time to completely rest and recharge since it is given this time to relax. The benefits that many experience during this float is that it allows them to focus on specific things more intensely whether is a particular athletic sport, artistic creativity, problem solving. This absence of senses is what allows you to enter a deep meditative state without having to do the training that other forms of meditation take years to acheive.
